A FINE DUTCH BROADSWORD C.1650

About the piece

This sword epitomizes the form which became known as the Walloon. It was a popular horsemans sword throughout Europe. This example is one of a specific group used by the Amsterdam Town Guard. The large blade is inscribed SAHAGOM, in each fuller, derived from the Spanish maker, Alanzo de Aahagom, though on Northern European swords, it is merely a suggestion of quality by association. The blade is further marked at the fort with a makers mark with the Amsterdam town mark opposite. The quillon is marked with a flower on the left side. Its exceptional state of preservation, including both intricately pierced shell plates and original red wool blade seat, reinforces its attribution to the Amsterdam arsenal.Blade length: 37 1/8"
