A FINE FRENCH SILVER HILT SMALLSWORD C.1790
About the piece
The French Revolution, inspired by the successful American Revolution, came on the heels of social and cultural change. Class distinction, long accepted and thought by the nobility to be a birthright, divided the populous. This sword was carried by a member of the upper class. Its silver hilt is delicately pierced and embellished with faceted stud designed to glitter in the candle lit world of the upper class which included ballrooms, great dining halls, fine restaurants and the theater. Wearing it on the street was a proclamation of its owners place in those circles. It is distinguished by the fine preservation of the blued and gilt decoration of the blade. It is accompanied by a leather scabbard with silvered mounts which is either original to it or a working life replacement, as the condition of the blade indicates that it was always kept in a scabbard.Blade length: 32 1/2"
