About the piece
Bronze hilt, originally gilt with considerable heavy gold to the protected underside of the shell guard. Ribbed bone grip (one tiny chip). 29 3/8" spadroon form blade decorated with a display of arms flanked by foliage each side. The forte with German maker's mark and a cluster of punch marks. Copper rich brass scabbard decorated with large foliage splays both ends and flanking the center mount. Shows good patina with numerous superficial dents from use. Blade with gray patina, the decoration weak as applied. Hilt with dark patina.
