About the piece

About the artist
Blake Brasher was born in Oklahoma City, OK in December 1978. His father was in the Air Force, and by the time Blake was one year old he had already moved twice and was living in North Pole, Alaska–where he stayed with his mother and sister while his father continued to travel the world. When Blake was seven his family reunited in Adana, Turkey. They lived in Turkey for three years, then in San Antonio for a year, finally returning to Alaska in 1992. Having grown sick of the snow, Blake’s family relocated to Peoria, Arizona when he was in high school.

Blake moved to Cambridge, MA to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1997 and has lived in the Boston area ever since. Navigating a path between the fine arts and the sciences, Blake earned a Bachelor of Science in Art and Design from MIT while cross registering for painting classes at Harvard and doing robotics research at the MIT Media Lab. He maintains this balance today with a 30 hour a week job as a robotics researcher at Google and a prolific studio practice in which he generally produces at least four new paintings a week.

Blake is deeply curious about the natural world and the nature of reality. His work is an exploration of human consciousness. His process involves first working quickly on a number of smaller paintings simultaneously. Working on many paintings at once allows him to separate different compositional ideas and iterate on a theme, instead of being tempted to put everything into a single piece. Over time, a process will emerge as a set of guidelines for how to create the kind of painting he is interested in, and he will then use this process to create a larger paintings. Having worked out details like in which order to layer his various media and what colors to use in which proportions, Blake can work on his paintings in a deeply meditative state of mind.

Blake Brasher is a visual artist working in mixed media painting. His colorful abstractions are reflections on the nature of reality and what it is like to be a thinking being in a universe that is at once beautiful and terrifying. He grew up in Alaska, Turkey, Texas, and Arizona and has been living in Massachusetts since 1997. He received his BS in Art and Design from MIT in 2003 and has been exhibiting his work publicly since 2008. His work is internationally collected, and he has participated in artist residency programs in Italy, Romania, France, New York, and Massachusetts.
