TANIJA & GRAHAM CARR

About the piece
Tanija & Graham Carr's sculptures appear both ritualistic and symbolic and have the impression of both antiquity and future. The concept of bowl and vessel is extended and enhanced with a powerful sculptural presence.

Looking at one of Tanija & Graham Carr’s vessels you expect it to be met with the hard texture of wood. However instead, the sculptural vessels are pliable and soft as a feature of the leather the artists incise and dye, using traditional tools to achieve the look of carved wood. The sculptures are so labor intensive that the Carr’s make only 8-10 pieces each year.

About the artist
The Carrs are among Western Australia’s most respected studio craft practitioners, internationally renowned for their powerful and ambiguous sculptural objects. They employ the ancient technique of leather craft, transforming this common material into objects reminiscent of cast metal, carved stone, ceramics, wood or bone. No one else on the planet employs the techniques that they have developed and refined over their 35-year career.

The Carrs are unique not only for their choice of material, but also for the collaborative nature of their practice, developing all of their works in tandem from their home studio in the foothills outside of Perth. From here they have established a formidable international reputation, showing regularly in the United States for the past two decades, as well as with galleries across Australia and in Hong Kong.
