A SPANISH OR ITALIAN SWEPT-HILT RAPIER C.1600
About the piece
This rapier was produced for personal protection and is intended for use on foot. The hilt is of a rare form (Norman #31). An example in the Wallace Collection, A627, identified as North Italian C.1600, is mounted with a hilt of identical form. The blade is Spanish with the Toledo mark to the ricasso and inscribed *I N T I DOMINI* each side. Northern Italy was ruled by the Spanish Habsburgs at the time and Spanish blades were used throughout the empire. Accordingly, it is likely that this sword is Italian with a Spanish blade, but its manufacture and use in Spain is possible also.Blade length: 35 3/4"
