About the piece

Swords of this form are often identified as hunting swords though it is known that they were widely, if not predominately, used as civilian side arms. The hilt is finely chiseled and retains much original blued finish. The ivory grip with its fantastic Janus form animal head and baronial helmet was made to order in Indonesia for mounting in Holland. This form of decoration was popular about 1660-80 when ivory imports from Indonesia reached their zenith. The curved blade is fashioned with a saw back, a feature common to hunting swords to facilitate the dismembering of game and carried over to side arms, evidently for fashion.Blade length: 18”
