About the piece
French and Indian War period, mid-18th century. Form later standardized into the 1796 pattern with the addition of foliage decoration and a hinged side guard. This example with brass hilt (dark patina), slightly asymmetrical thickened edge double shell guard, faceted urn form pommel and copper wire wrapped grip. The forward quillon removed in its working life as often encountered. 27 5/8" straight s.e. blade with broad fuller shows dark patina, mostly smooth and glossy with a little scattered pitting only. Original velvet blade seat. Classic as served in America through the Revolution and carried by American officers as well.
