About the piece
This beautiful black-figure vase, with a palmette design decorating the broad upper surface of the lip, most likely depicts Hephaestus giving Thetis the arms of Achilles, with hoplites present.
Reverse: Two hoplites (or perhaps the legendary mythological twins Aktorione and Molione) stand atop their chariot, with two other hoplites and chariots next to them.
Ex- European private collection, early 1990s.
