About the piece

This magnificent silver drinking vessel has the shape of a tall funnel and is decorated with high relief motifs executed in repousse.

Around the body is a naturally rendered ivy wreath intricately knotted at the back. Above the wreath are five rows of diamond pattern, and below, a frieze of upward pointing palmettes. Substantial traces of gilding evident on the body. Very rare.

Cf. A similar rython (but with animal motifs), sold at Christie's New York, 11 June 2003, lot 191 (Realized $141,900); another related rython published in Pottery, Pavements, and Paradise, Iconographic and Textual Studies on Late Antiquity, Annewies Van Den Hoek and John J. Hermann Jr., fig. 43 a., p.427.

Ex- Important California private collection, 1980s; European art market.
