About the piece
Nature has always been an important subject and inspiration in Barbara Berry’s art. Her goal is to express the vivid, living quality of the natural world, as well as highlight the innate connections and tensions that exist between human beings and the larger environment. Having studied Buddhism for thirty years, Berry’s art combines imagery from nature (animals, plants, the human figure and human anatomy) with imagery from Tibetan Buddhist paintings known as thangkas. Her work explores the pure physical act of sight and the visionary quality of going beyond the sense perceptions into the realm of imagination and visualization.

About the artist
Barbara Berry was born in Denver Colorado. She earned a BFA at the Parsons School of Design in New York City and an MFA from the University of Colorado at Boulder. After living in Boston for four years, she moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1989. Berry has exhibited extensively in Canada and the United States.

In addition to private collectors, her works have been purchased by the Nova Scotia Art Bank and the Canada Council Art Bank. In 2009 she received a Creation Grant from the Nova Scotia Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture, for a project entitled “Vision/Ex’Voto”. From 2004 to 2013 she taught drawing, painting and printmaking at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Recently, in the exhibition entitled “Sacred Outlooks” at the Hermes Gallery in Halifax Nova Scotia, Berry showed art inspired and motivated by her own personal spiritual path and meditations on the Five Buddha Families. She currently lives and works from her studio on the South Shore of Nova Scotia.
