About the piece

BREMER, FREDERIKA. (1801-1865). Swedish author and pioneering feminist. Signed image. (Frederika Bremer). 1p. Small folio. N.p., N.d. An engraving of Bremer depicted in three-quarters profile wearing an intricate lace cap; signed beneath the image. Although raised with the expectation that she would marry an aristocrat, Bremer eschewed marriage and instead pursued a writer's career. She authored a number of novels popular in Sweden and around the world including Hertha, Hemmet eller familje-sorger och fröjder, (The home; or, Family Cares and Family Joys), Grannarna (The Neighbors: A Story of Every-day Life),Hemmen i den nya världen, (The Homes of the New World: Impressions of America), and Livet i gamla världen (Life in the Old World). Her 1856 novel Hertha, about the plight of women in society, prompted the Swedish legislature to establish an age of legal majority for unmarried women. It also contributed to the creation of educational opportunities for women in Sweden. She also advocated for female suffrage and, in 1884, Sweden's first women's rights organization, the Frederika Bremer Förbundet, was named in her honor. Some light wear at the edges, otherwise in very good condition. Signed images predating the popularity of photographs are uncommon.
