About the piece -Torah cabinet with back-illuminated front door inlaid stone panel depicting a pomegranate and leaf motif. The cabinet is crested by a Walnut Burl and Satinwood tiara with ruby gems set in gold findings. The casework is constructed with Baltic birch, three ply veneer on both sides, solid satinwood and walnut made to tight tolerances (.010”) was the easy part. Some of the challenges in the designing phase was to find a way to push a tremendous amount of light through the stone to illuminate it like stained glass, (400 LED lights), not have any visible power source supplying the electricity to the door, (from the floor of the cabinet up through the hinges) and sturdy enough to tolerate the door being slammed shut, not breaking the fragile stone (custom torsion box door, on a curve). As you see from the pics, the curved casework had to be well planned to execute this ‘using every clamp in town’ Gorilla glue-up at it’s best!
