BARBARA BERRY
Oil and acrylic on wood with crochet blanket, 2014
53" x 58" x 4"

About the piece
Barbara Berry’s paintings are wooden constructions that hang on the wall, yet have three-dimensional aspects, which move off the surface of the work. Her paintings are assembled in pieces, like a child’s jigsaw puzzle, yet when put together create a dynamic whole with references both to the history of representational and illusionistic painting and to the physical presence of object and form in sculpture.

About the artist
Barbara Berry was born in Denver Colorado. She earned a BFA at the Parsons School of Design in New York City and an MFA from the University of Colorado at Boulder. After living in Boston for four years, she moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1989. Berry has exhibited extensively in Canada and the United States.

In addition to private collectors, her works have been purchased by the Nova Scotia Art Bank and the Canada Council Art Bank. In 2009 she received a Creation Grant from the Nova Scotia Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture, for a project entitled “Vision/Ex’Voto”. From 2004 to 2013 she taught drawing, painting and printmaking at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Recently, in the exhibition entitled “Sacred Outlooks” at the Hermes Gallery in Halifax Nova Scotia, Berry showed art inspired and motivated by her own personal spiritual path and meditations on the Five Buddha Families. She currently lives and works from her studio on the South Shore of Nova Scotia.
