About the piece

About the artist
Brandon David Henrie, originally from Salina, Utah, is currently attending the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. His work is inspired by the beauty of decay as exemplified in the Eastern theory of wabi-sabi and the Western traditions of Gothic romanticism and memento mori. His paintings are process-based, applying the deconstructive power of oxidation, combustion, flooding, and freezing and exploring their effects on the binding agents contained in commercial pigments. His work exposes the dialectic of faith-based belief or scientific rationalism with the chaotic, degenerative forces afoot in the universe. It exposes and undermines the fallacy of “the eternal” and the myth of systemic predictability in the cosmos.
