About the artist
After some years working in education and as a part-time artist and film-maker (with one award), Robert Brook has been a full-time professional photographer since 1992 and has had images published in books and journals in more than 40 countries. In the early years he exhibited in many group exhibitions including a Serpentine Summer show (1977) and work was bought for various collections including the Contemporary Art Society and the personal collection of the photographer Duffy. He then abandoned personal work for a period to concentrate purely on selling to editorial and commercial markets, specialising in industry, environmental issues and night photography, only recently returning to a more experimental approach.
The art critic Jonathan Jones, commenting on one of his night photos of Sellafield published in the Guardian, suggested it: “evokes science-fiction images of alien phenomena infiltrating the natural landscape”. Much of his more recent work is a play on this duality, albeit in a less obvious and dramatic sense.
